many of you know that my nephew, austin, is off at basic training. needless to say, we miss him horribly. he took this picture with his phone and sent it to his girlfriend before they actually pulled out for basic... this is the little boy that i used to babysit...how is he an adult in a uniform already?! it looks funny for him to be serious...he always had a smile and a laugh.

thankfully, his platoon is one that is experimenting with having a facebook page, so we are able to "see" him and hear about him through that. they post updates with what each company is doing and they post pictures for us to see. what did people do before technology like this?! it certainly helps us back here at home. so, i check each picture to find him and finally today, he is in one!! he is in the 2nd row.

i think it is a lot harder than he expected. i guess you never really know what an experience like that will be like until you are there. he has written only a few letters to his parents and girlfriend. he said that the letters from home are the only thing that he has to smile about. so, i keep writing. i can't say that much of what is in my letters is very interesting...but, it is "home" and normal, i guess. i miss him tons. the "mom" part of me just wants him safe at home. we are praying for you private perry...and we love you.
It's a very brave thing Austin is doing. It's great that you have contact with him. My cousin is in Iraq and we were able to talk on FB until he Army thought it could be a security risk. It's difficult having limited contact.
