strawberry jelly...in the making
after a full saturday with the yardsale and picking strawberries...we got a quick shower and got to making strawberry jam! i had never made this before, but had done grape...so i had an idea of what to do...and the boys were ready to help. (if only someone had told me that i had picked enough for a small army!) first we cleaned, cut, and crushed the strawberries...this was the favorite task for the boys!
next we measured 2 cups of the crushed stwawberries...
and added 4 cups of sugar...yes, you read that right!
i did the hot work...which was boiling sugar and pectin...adding the fruit...and putting in containers. no picture of that because i was looking very "barefoot and pregnant"! the first day, we did 8 batches...which took 4 hours...and gave us 32 containers of jelly! and i still had 2 large bowls of strawberries left! i thought of freezing them sliced or just eating them...but i really wanted to get them all into jelly. so, i called mom for jars and we stopped at giant for more supplies and we got to it again today! aaron did a ton of the work...when i came down from my nap, he had them all cut and ready to go...so, i did the sitting work today and he did the hot work! (much more fun and much faster when you are working together!) isn't he cute?
adin is always the helper...here wearing dads red shirt so as to not ruin another one!
we did 23 more jars on sunday...for a grand total of 66!
i think this will be a good start...but we like the pb&j here and i love an english muffin with jelly before bed! so, we will see if it holds out till this time next year!
