after church on sunday, we decided to do an impromptu cook out at our house. my whole family was over and we were just getting our plates. i was the last one out...just in time to hear toby falling from the slide. i ran over and could tell that this was not a normal cry...it was a scream that didn't let up. we gave him advil right away and i left for the ER...lunch still sitting on the table! when we arrived, he began to go in and out on me...so, i ran him in and they took him right back. first they had to do a neurological check because i could not tell them if he had hit his head. he did great with the CT scan and then it was off to x-ray...which was horrific for him. he was in a great deal of pain if anyone even touched his arm. it was not long at all until the doctor was in to tell me that it was a fracture of the upper arm right above the elbow and would require surgery in hershey. at that point, i called aaron to get in there right away! thankfully, we did not require the helicopter and were able to ride in an ambulance there...while aaron followed in the car. toby was given an IV and morphine before we left, so he was able to sleep for most of the ride. i laid down and tried too!

when we arrived in hershey, there was a full trauma team waiting for us. toby was taken in to a room of about 20 people and i had to stay out and give all of his information. aaron caught up with me there. when we went in, he was calm and had on a party hat and a bear!

they took blood and did many more x-rays in that room and he was seen by the neuro doctor, orthopedic doctor, and it was confirmed that he would be having surgery. he was admitted and we were able to relax in his room for a short time while everything was set up. hershey has tv/dvd players in all of the kids rooms, so toby was able to watch veggietales and dora, which helped him a lot. we met with the anastheologists and the surgeons in the room and then went with him to be prepped. i was worried that i would have the hardest time when i had to leave him for surgery, but am fully aware of the number of people that were praying because i had unexplainable peace as we watched him roll away on his bed. i usually question everything that i am told, but i was very confident and reliant on what the doctors were telling us and that they would care for toby in the best way. don't get me wrong...it is a horrible feeling to watch your son be taken into something like surgery, but what a relief to know that Jesus is with him...especially when we can't be. we prayed with him before he went and he was very calm and did whatever they asked him to do. so, while we waited, we finally got some pizza and talked to the nurses...then the surgeon came in to tell us that toby did wonderful in surgery and that he expected a full recovery and normal use of his arm. we headed down to see him...pizza in hand! he was asleep when we got there and they were letting him come out slowly...so, we waited...

this picture was when he first opened his eyes and we could talk to him. he was on a high level of morphine at this point, but he was our boy...awake and well in front of us, so that was all that we cared about! after about another hour, we were able to go back to our room and "rest". aaron got the recliner and i got in bed with toby. mind you, we took absolutely nothing along...so, we were a frumpy mess...but who cares! toby had hourly checks, so it was an up and down night...and we were released by lunchtime on monday.

this was toby the morning after surgery...figuring out how to function with 2 non working hands at that point! once that IV was out, he was glad to be able to use a hand...even if it was the left one! it amazed me how little he looked in that big bed...but also how big he seemed as he took one step at a time. he did a great job and was an example to me of getting it done...even when it isn't easy. so, now we go back in 1 week to see the orthopedic surgeon again...and he will probably get a hard cast at that time, which he will have for about a month. for now, he has to rest for at least 3 days with his arm elevated. anyone that knows toby, knows that is a tall order, but he is doing it with no complaints! he is enjoying lots of cartoons and lots of attention!
