now entering the stage: Emmaus Eden Smith

on monday, september 14th, aaron and i arrived at the hospital at 5:30am. it wasn't too hard to get up because i didn't hardly sleep anyway! my mom was at the house with the boys and we just headed out on a dark morning together. after a good cry and prayer in the shower, i felt ok. i knew that i was not going to like most of what went on that morning, but i also knew that by mid morning, i would be holding my newest little addition and that it would overshadow what i had to go through. we parked, got all of our stuff out of the trunk, and headed to the 5th floor. they sent me to my room to get changed and underway! i was in room 575, which was a nice big room right beside the surgical room. the first thing on the agenda was the IV. any of you that know me at all, know that this was my biggest fear. i detest getting them and i usually get myself so worked up that by the time they even touch me, i get light headed. well, this was no exception! i had a nurse that wasn't too sure of herself in this department...so, after about 5 tries...me saying "owww" every time, i totally passed out, "convulsed" (as aaron tells me), and got the smelling salts...then they brought in another nurse that was as slick as anything. i was at least glad for that!
so, once that was in, i knew that my biggest fear was passed and i could deal with the rest. there is also a neutralizing drink that you get to throw back...my c-section moms know about this...it is horrible, but i didn't throw it up. while i was getting all of the prep done...aaron got dressed in his outfit...i think that he secretly likes to wear the scrubs!
when we were all signed and set, i walked across the hall to the surgery room. aaron doesn't get to come along at first...so, i always hate that time when he has to wait in the hall. the room is cold and white, but the people are always very friendly and helpful. i had wonderful nurses and dr orndorf was there, so that made me feel safe. the first thing in that room was getting the spinal...not the most fun in the world, but not that horrible either. once that is in, i lay back, get a blue drape, and they handle everything from there.
aaron gets to come on once everything is done and they are starting. whatever cocktail of drugs they used this time kept me very comfortable, yet aware of what was happening...so, i was able to talk and understand and be more apart of the play by play. it took a little longer this time because of scar tissue and stuff like that...i was able to just talk to aaron while we waited. finally we heard...here is the head...which is a good thing to have. then the baby was out...then we heard this cry that sounded like a very mad cat. it was a tiny little voice that had some major authority behind it. we got the confirmation of what we had most likely known to be true...it's a GIRL. many of you know that this was not my first choice, but the minute they put her little head around that curtain, i was so completely in love with her that i prayed right then and thanked God for giving me what he knew i needed instead of what i necessairly thought i needed. dr orndorf did a great job throughout our pregnancy...and a great job in that delivery room. i felt that he truely cared for us as people and that he was cheering right with us when we welcomed our little girl. he was a great doctor and a very reassuring person for us over the last year.
i didn't add any of the c-section pictures here because i am never sure how much is too much?! but, here is aaron cutting the cord! that's me behind the blue curtain. i was glad to be able to hear what all was going on around me.
maisy coming over to meet me. she was so beautiful and tiny. i had sworn that she would be at least 8 lbs because i felt so "full" with her in there...but she was a mini...only 6 lbs 11 oz. she had resemblances of adin and toby...and looked a lot like me right at that minute. i wanted to keep her there, but as always, aaron goes with the baby as they return to the room for all of their measurements and tests while i finish up.
she was considered "premature" because of a few factors...but had no difficulties because of this. i am guessing by my dates that she was about 3 weeks early...so, we were thankful for that first cry and that she was able to suck after a few tries.
aaron always enjoys his time with our babies until i get back to the room. i am glad that he has some time alone to hold them and talk to them. but, i am always thankul to get wheeled back into that room too! he usually gets to keep holding them for awhile until i am able to sit up and feel ok...but it is just good to be there and know that we are all ok!
maisy spent some time in the warmer to keep her body temp up. she had such pretty skin and such a nice round head. well, of course, everything about her is perfect to me...
first bath completed and getting some pink clothes on...that is something we never did before!
i had a little trouble getting the pain under control this time and kept having waves of nausea...but nothing so much that i didn't get ahold of her the first chance i could. i know that i look horrible, but you can never put into words how it feels to hold that little person that you have been waiting to meet for so long. it amazes me how much you love each child...and your heart just grows so much each time...it doesn't take anything away from the other kids for you to love this one so much.
i regretted ever even having the thought that i might not want a girl as much as a boy. she is truely a gift and i look forward to every day with her. it will be different than the boys...but in a great way. i feel so complete to have adin, tobias, and emmaus...i am so blessed beyond what i could have ever asked for.
this was one of the only times that maisy laid in her little cage. i tend to not put my kids down for...oh, about a year...but, we wanted to get a picture with her "stats". wow, what an unbelievable morning!
